Student Poster Session and Competition

Students are invited to participate in the poster session and competition. The abstract deadline for student posters is January 25, 2008. Only electronic submissions will be accepted.  Each student should submit an abstract using the format guidelines described below. Please clearly indicate that the abstract is for the student poster competition. Each student can enter the competition with one poster only. Students will receive a confirmation note and a poster number shortly after submission. Only confirmed posters will be displayed. Each poster will be mounted on the boards provided at the conference site. You will be notified for the size of the poster requirements upon acceptance of your abstract.

In order to participate in the competition all posters must be in place not later than Monday, March 10, by 7:30 AM.   Students must be present to discuss their poster with judges during three Judging Rounds:  7:30 and 9:00 AM Monday morning; 4:30 – 7:00 PM Monday afternoon and 7:30 – 8:30 AM Tuesday morning.

Cash prizes and one-year student membership in AVS or FSM will be awarded to poster winners. A limited number of competing students from Florida Colleges and Universities will receive financial support to cover hotel and travel expenses. Students are also strongly encouraged to attend all the technical sessions.

Instructions for Preparing Abstracts: the title of the talk should be on the first line in all capital letters, (except chemical symbols). Leave one blank line, and then type the names of the authors using upper and lower case as needed. The presenter’s name should be underlined. Leave another blank line, and type each author's affiliation and postal address. Leave a few blank lines before the abstract text and indicate student status (graduate, undergraduate), poster category (biological science, materials characterization/physical microscopy, materials science), and name and e-mail for contact. Leave another blank line and type abstract text, single-spaced, with one blank line between paragraphs. The body of the abstract text is limited to 200 words.

Students are responsible for dismantling their posters no later than 3 pm on Tuesday, March 11. Posters left behind after the stipulated time for removal will be disposed of and are not the responsibility of the organization.

For additional information, please contact Dr. Mariana Sendova (sendova@ncf.edu) or  Dr. Helge Heinrich (hheinric@mail.ucf.edu).

GUIDELINES TO PREPARE A POSTER DISPLAY

Print title and authors in extra large characters across the top and in the center of your display so that viewers can easily see it from a distance (e.g. 36 pt font).
Display your material in large print such as 36 pt font for section headings, and 24 pt font for text so it may be easy to read from a distance.
Use bullet points to simplify sections like introduction and conclusions.
Use underlines and boldface, and use graphs and figures whenever possible to make your poster visually pleasing.
Each poster will be mounted on the boards provided at the conference site.
The boards are approximately 4’ by 3’ (portrait format).
Each board will be labeled with the poster number.
